Lightyear is an upcoming American computer-animated science fiction action-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is a spin-off of the Toy Story film series, serving as an origin story for the fictional test pilot/astronaut character who the Buzz Lightyear toy/action figure featured in the main films was inspired by, and is presented as a blockbuster film within a film the characters in Toy Story would watch movies. This concept was previously explored with the 2000 direct-to-video film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins which was the pilot to a spin-off television series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (2000–2001). The film was co-written and directed by Angus MacLane and stars Chris Evans as the voice of the title character, with Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr. in supporting roles.
Pixar released a trailer for their new sci-fi film, Lightyear, which will hit theaters in June 2022. Lightyear is a spin-off from Toy Story that tells the story of space astronaut Buzz Lightyear.
Lightyear reveals more time travel storylines that Buzz Lightyear will do. “The world of Buzz has always been something that excites me,” said Angus MacLane, quoted by Mind-People.com from the Space page.
What inspired Angus MacLane to work on watching movies was his curiosity about Buzz Lightyear’s character as a room guard who was one of Andy’s toys in Toy Story. For Angus MacLane, Lightyear is a film about how Buzz Lightyear became an incredibly interesting character that made Andy make him one of his favorite toys. Angus MacLane admitted that he was lucky enough to be able to work on the Lightyear film to completion.
The trailer for Lightyear’s film shows Buzz Lightyear sending mission logs to Star Command before being strapped to an experimental spacecraft while stranded on a planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth. Buzz Lightyear is stranded in that remote world with his young commander and crew.
Captain America actor Chris Evans provides the voice for Buzz Lightyear.
The trailer also shows the character of a robotic cat named Sox who can talk like a human. Peter Sohn is the voice actor for this character.
Chris Evans was announced as the voice of the human Buzz Lightyear along with the project’s announcement in December 2020. Evans was the first and only choice MacLane had for Buzz. He visited Pixar’s offices one day and they pitched him the project during a visit. Evans accepted the offer immediately, given his love for animation. Taika Waititi was reported to have been cast in an undisclosed role in November 2021. Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr. were reported to have been cast in supporting roles in February 2022, following the release movies of the official trailer. On May 6, 2022, European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake was revealed to have a cameo as “Tim from Mission Control”.
The animators wanted the film to look “cinematic” and “chunky” in order to evoke the feeling of the sci-fi films MacLane grew up with. In order to achieve this, they asked a former Industrial Light & Magic employee to build a spaceship model for them, from which the animators drew inspiration; this technique was inspired by designers for early sci-fi films using models as inspiration for their sets and props. MacLane said the animation took several “visual lessons” from early sci-fi and space opera films such as those of the Star Wars franchise, though without intentionally imitating such films. For the IMAX release, it will be the first animated feature film in history to have its aspect ratio opened up from 2.39:1 to 1.43:1 for select sequences of the film.
