The film Morbius has been projected as the lowest-grossing spin-off to live action Spider-Man in theaters. The Deadline page predicts that the film, starring Jared Leto, will only be able to reach 50 million US dollars in its first week of debut.
Morbius pelicula is a 2022 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Morbius, the Living Vampire, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, it stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. In the film, Morbius becomes a living vampire after curing himself of a rare disease.
Principal photography began during the last week of February 2019 in London, under the working title Plasma. Oliver Wood served as cinematographer for the film. With the start of filming, Jared Harris and Tyrese Gibson joined the cast as Morbius’s mentor and an FBI agent hunting Morbius celý film, respectively. Smith was reported to be portraying the villainous Loxias Crown / Hunger, though he was later revealed to be playing an original character named Milo who is similar to Loxias Crown. Harris was revealed to be portraying Dr. Nicholas, a mentor and father figure to both Michael and Milo. In March, filming took place in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, doubling for New York City. A month later, Gibson revealed that he was portraying Simon Stroud, and that Al Madrigal had been cast as his partner, Alberto Rodriguez. At the end of the month, Justin Haythe was believed to have contributed to the film’s script. Filming was scheduled to take 12 weeks, and Venom producer Amy Pascal said in June that production had “just wrapped” on the project.
This figure is the lowest debut weekend for a live-action Spider-Man film, although it is higher than the debut weekend of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which opened with $35 million.
At $50 million, Morbius’ opening weekend was well below that of Venom (US$80 million) and Sonic 2 the movie (US$90 million), and well below any film featuring Spider-Man. The lowest-grossing live-action Spider-Man debut so far was 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with $91 million.
But when compared to films like Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, and New Mutants, Morbius’ weekend is still high. It’s just that it can’t be called an achievement because all of these films were released as long as cinemas in several countries were still not operating due to the restrictions on the Covid-19 pandemic.
Reported at Screen Rant, Sunday (27/3/2022), Sony has high hopes for Morbius because they want the film to continue the success of Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage and strengthen the Sony Spider-Man Universe. After Morbius, the studio also has plans for Aaron Taylor Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter and Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web.
With a projected budget of $75 million, a $50 million opening weekend for Morbius would still be a win for Sony, as it is likely to recover its budget within two weeks of its domestic release.
Morbius stream was originally set for release in July 2020, but was delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The film was then set for release in January 2022, but was postponed again to April 1, 2022.
Morbius’ future in this franchise is still unknown. But the filmmakers have teased a potential team-up between Morbius and other Spider-Man villains to form The Sinister Six. Morbius actor, Jared Leto, even teased to want a crossover with Venom. Much of this will be determined by how audiences react to Morbius when it hits theaters.
