Hawkeye Secretly Revealed A Massive Multiverse Saga Problem

Hawkeye served as a fun Christmas TV series entry for the MCU’s Phase 4, but some details in the series highlight a problem for the Multiverse Saga.

As the MCU moves ahead with the Multiverse Saga, there is one large problem that was quietly revealed in the Hawkeye TV series. Clint Barton’s place on the Avengers team has often been a cause for ridicule from audiences in a way that overlooks a key element that he brings to the team. The same can be said for Black Widow to a lesser extent as her MCU version was not given a super serum in the way of her comics counterpart, and her death before Hawkeye makes this more notable.

In Hawkeye, Kate Bishop idolizes Hawkeye as an Avenger, based mostly on her seeing him during the Battle of New York. However, she repeatedly states that he needs a better brand and a costume that stands out more, resulting in her making them matching costumes that bear a resemblance to the original comic book Hawkeye costume. Clint Barton pushes back against the idea of needing to be recognizable, pushing the fact that he has always worked hard to not be recognizable quite intentionally. His change at Bishop’s hands is set to cause a major issue for the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

Why Clint & Natasha Were So Important To The Infinity Saga

Despite being mocked for their lack of superpowers by some audiences, Hawkeye and Black Widow served a vital purpose in the Infinity Saga. Clint Barton doesn’t have a distinctive costume because he is, at the end of the day, a spy. Both he and Natasha rely on the ability to move through areas undetected to learn secret information and conduct clandestine assassinations. While they might not have superpowers, they are skilled at what they do, and are perhaps the darkest of the MCU heroes for all the blood on their ledgers.

Clint and Natasha’s roles in the MCU’s Infinity Saga were important from a practical standpoint, as they provided deadly silent skills others lacked. However, they were also crucial for the MCU’s narrative and balance. While the franchise is known for its showy, explosive battles, the more subtle spycraft from characters like Hawkeye and Black Widow helped to balance those moments when it came to the flow of the movies and the franchise, as seen with stories such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Why The Multiverse Saga Needs Hawkeye

The Multiverse Saga has introduced a lot of new heroes, but it is vital that it keeps Clint Barton’s Hawkeye. The new lineup of heroes and anti-heroes are defined by their strength and their ability to hold their own during chaotic battle scenes. While Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova might seem to be the exceptions to this issue, serving as Clint and Natasha’s successors, that is a tiny percentage of the growing roster. Moreover, Hawkeye demonstrated that both Yelena and Kate, while having some talent for stealth, are more flashy than their predecessors, both with their operations and their costumes.
