Cobra Kai season 6 will officially be the last as Netflix is bringing the hit Karate Kid sequel show to an end with an epic final showdown.
After five widely acclaimed seasons, Cobra Kai is officially coming to an end on Netflix. The drama series acts as a sequel to the Karate Kid movie franchise, following the modern-day stories of Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence as they find their rivalry reignited when the latter reopens the titular martial arts dojo, only for the return of other familiar faces and dangerous fights between their students see them seek to put their pasts behind them.
Just a few months after the show’s jaw-dropping season 5, Netflix has revealed that Cobra Kai season 6 will officially end the Karate Kid sequel show.
The streaming platform released both a video hyping an epic final showdown heading into the series’ final chapter, as well as a letter from showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg under the guise of the All-Valley Karate Championships Tournament Committee announcing the conclusion of the hit Karate Kid sequel series.
What We Know About Cobra Kai Season 6
In the months since season 5 premiered, audiences have been waiting with bated breath for a confirmation on Cobra Kai’s season 6 renewal, with Netflix surprisingly remaining silent on the show’s future, despite greenlighting both seasons 4 and 5 prior to their predecessors’ premieres. The showrunners behind the hit Karate Kid sequel show had expressed their hopes for the show to continue past a season 6, while Macchio previously teased that scenes had been filmed for what will now be the final chapter before even receiving the greenlight for more of the show. While much of the cast and crew remained optimistic about the show coming back for at least one more season, the elongated hiatus led to the belief that Cobra Kai season 6 would be the end which, while a sad note for some, was a welcome idea for others eager to see the series go out on a high note, namely after season 5 landed a rare 100 percent perfect approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the time of writing, not much is known about what’s to come from the story of Cobra Kai season 6, though it is expected to see the return of John Kreese after faking his death in a prison fight and having escaped prison, clearly with the goal of getting revenge against both Daniel and Johnny, as well as Thomas Ian Griffith’s Terry Silver. However, it’s currently unknown if the latter will make his way back to the fold after being defeated by Daniel in the season 5 finale and abandoned by his Cobra Kai students after being exposed for the maniac he is. With the showrunners’ statement above indicating the show could be leaving the Valley, Cobra Kai season 6 could also finally give Daniel and Johnny a proper closing chapter as they move away from the area that has brought them so much heartbreak towards a place they can enjoy a happy remainder of their lives.
Will Cobra Kai’s Final Season Set Up New Karate Kid Movie?
It is interesting to note that the showrunners’ confirmation of Cobra Kai season 6 being the end also sees them expressing the hopes to continue telling stories in the Miyagi-Verse, raising the question of whether the final season will set up a new Karate Kid movie, which was confirmed to be in the works this past September. Hurwitz previously indicated the film would not be connected to the series, however, Zabka did tease the possibility of a whole trilogy of movies being developed for the Cobra Kai characters, establishing multiple potential paths for the Miyagi-Verse to continue past the show’s finale, be it with Daniel and Johnny, or with the young cast of characters. While audiences await word on when it will return for its swan song, they can revisit the first five Cobra Kai seasons streaming on Netflix now.
